Support Engineer

Salary: competitive

Description
We're looking for a knowledgeable, enthusiastic support engineer who will support the clients who use our websites and software. We want someone who is great at talking to clients and who can fix technical problems.

Design UK use ColdFusion and Java in our web applications, we are primarily a Windows shop, but we also have a fair smattering of Macs internally. If you're the right candidate, we'd like this to evolve into a more senior role, with the opportunity to be responsible for our client support.

Responsibilities
The main responsibilities of this important role is providing support to our clients for the websites and LavaSuite application. LavaSuite is a suite of website management tools encompassing Content Management, Email marketing, eCommerce and Analytics. A secondary role will be providing internal network support to the Design UK offices

Key tasks:

  • Answering customer queries by telephone and email on how to use our LavaSuite web management software
  • Diagnosing and fixing problems that might occur with our client websites and LavaSuite
  • Working with our development team and services team to deal with support issues quickly
  • Doing pre-emptive maintenance to prevent problems occurring in the first place
  • Working with our hosting partner and our client's IT departments, to help improve their web hosting environment
  • Reporting bugs and issues with our products.
  • With training & guidance from Design UK Technical staff learning our LavaSuite web management software and our internal systems
  • Setting up and responding to various monitoring systems
  • Installing web server software
  • Internal network support
  • Setting up new machines
  • Windows domain administration
  • Monitoring and maintenance of our servers
  • Resolving Design UK staff's PC and Mac Blues
  • Documenting common problems in a knowledge base

 Key skills and attributes:

  • Great verbal and written communication skills
  • Friendly, a joy to talk to, you'll be one of the major points of contact for our clients
  • Good time management skills and ability to prioritise
  • Good all round IT skills, you should be able to pick up new bits of software easily without too much training.
  • Keen technical problem solver: When things are broken, you can fix them and you like doing it.
  • Attention to detail
  • Knowledge of networking and Windows server management
  • Good experience of HTML, CSS, Javascript
  • Experience with an image editing tool like Photoshop or Fireworks
  • Basic experience of a web programming language, ColdFusion would be ideal, but PHP, Java, ASP, Ruby on Rails are all good too
  • Exposure to SQL, databases ideally SQL Server, but MySQL, Oracle, DB2, Postgres all good.
  • Wide familiarity with the web and the technologies that enable it.
  • Ideally you will have experience working on a skilled helpdesk or in a digital agency.

Major pluses are:

  • SQL Server administration
  • IIS / Apache administration experience
  • Mac knowledge and administration experience
  • Exchange administration
  • Firewall, VPN configuration
  • Experience with configuration management tools such as SVN, Trac, ANT etc
